5: Marlins. Key Players Aquired: Pitcher Josh Johnson, Pitcher Scott Procter. Key losses: Outfielder Luis Gonzalez, Catcher Paul Do Luca, 1B Mike Jacobs, Pitcher Scott Olsen. Projected record: 68-94. The Marlins dont have the key pieces they need to be a winning team yet. They have a lot of young guys but they need to develope. The Marlins didn't spend any money this off-season to get any good players. They didn't resign players they might need and they traded two of their best players.
4: Nationals. Key Players Aquired: Pitcher Scott Olsen, Outfielder Josh Willingham, Pitcher Daniel Cabera, Outfielder Adam Dunn. Key Losses: Pitcher Chad Cordero, 1B Aaron Boone. Projected Record: 75-85. The Nationals added some key players that could help them out this season. They could have addressed the pitching aspect more. They could end up in 3rd place if some players step up and have good seasons.
3: Braves: Key Players Aquired: Pitcher Derek Lowe, Pitcher Javier Vazquez, Outfielder Garret Anderson. Key Losses: Pitcher John Smoltz, Reliever Will Ohman, Pitcher Mike Hampton. Projected Record: 81-81. The Braves have some bright spots but they also have some spots that need improvement. They could have used a true number one pitcher like AJ Burnett. They replaced John Smoltz with a pitcher about as equal as him. If the pitching holds up and the offense gets hot, look out. They are the dark horse to win the divison.
2: Mets: Key Players Aquired: Pitcher Francisco Rodriguez, Pitcher JJ Putz, Outfielder Jeremy Reed. Key Losses: Pitcher Pedro Martinez, Outfielder Moises Alou, Pitcher Orlando Hernandez. Projected Record: 89-73. The Mets addressed their biggest need this offseason with picking up two very good relievers. They also replaced Alou with Reed. If the offense can be productive they have a shot to take first or win the wild card in the NL. The Mets need to have their bullpen hold up because the last few years that has been their weakness.
1: Phillies. Key Players Aquired: Pitcher Chan Ho Park, Outfielder Raul Ibanez. Key Losses: 2B Tadahito Iguchi, Outfielder Pat Burrell, Pitcher Adam Eaton. Projected Record: 92-70. With the loss of Burrell, the Phillies went out and got a very good replacement. Ibanez should fit right in with the Phillies. The Phillies should repeat. They didnt lose anyone important other than Burrell who was replaced. Once Chase Utley is healthy they will be on pace for their divison title. The Phillies are in good shape entering the 2009 season.
